Stay her friend and wait this out. The truth is people don't usually date people they don't like at all so she probably does like him to a degree and doesn't just feel sorry for him. They'll probably break up eventually if she's sending you those kind of texts. And it does seem she's reaching out to you, although maybe as just a friend?? I'd tell her how you feel but not expect anything.
